Mark Rothko was an American abstract artist of Latvian Jewish descent, best known for his abstract expressionist paintings. Rothko produced ‘Untitled in 1963, a maroon canvas with a white boarder intersected with a black rectangular form. Rothko abandoned conventional titles for his artwork in 1947, only sometimes resorting to numbers or colours, to resist explaining the meaning of his work.
